Our Y9 girls came out victorious in yesterday's Wigan and Leigh cup final vs St John Fisher at Robin Park.
The game had an excellent start with Leona Howarth scoring in the opening set. However, then started to become a 'tit for tat' ordeal with both sides scoring tries in their opening sets. The girls never seemed to struggle in attack, quickly finding themselves 14 - 6 ahead and looking the clear favourites. SJF scored close to half time to make it 14-12 and our girls looked tired and deflated.
The half time team talk seemed to work well, and we quickly found ourselves 18 - 12 ahead. However, fatigue kicked in early into the second half and SJF scored back-to-back converted tries and found themselves 24 - 18 with momentum on their side. With around 10 minutes to go, a well worked Eddies try had us in touching distance of the game 22 – 24, but conversions were a killer for us missed all but one goal.
The girls showed great grit and determination, our biggest enemy for most of the game was defence and with less than 10 to go they dug deep, forced an error through good defence and scored in the next set 26 - 24 with 8 to play. The final 8 were a case of the girls again digging deep and showing great grit and team spirit. Some more superb defence forced a SJF error, that error sealed the game.
The final score was a victorious 26 - 24 to our team!
You could see at the end of the game just how much the win meant to them... and how hard they had to fight to bring the trophy home.
This team are undefeated and now hold the title of champions. A very special moment and you can see it on their faces.
The team list is:
Leah D, Leona H, Maisie T, Lacey-Mai G, Scarlet H, Amelia M, Nicola O, Lucy H, Rosie H, Poppy H, Tiana O, Summer L
