Mayor Andy Burnham Visits Our School
Yesterday, our school was delighted to welcome Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, for a special visit.
A familiar face to many members of our school community, Mr Burnham is a regular visitor to the school and has a longstanding connection with us, as his children are former pupils. His visit was warmly received by both students and staff.
During his time at the school, Mr Burnham met with students and staff and took part in an interview led by our talented reporters who are part of the Newsquest's Young Reporter Scheme
He was also interviewed by our Head Boy and Head Girl, who asked a range of questions about his role as Mayor, current local issues, and his vision for Greater Manchester.
As part of the interview, Mr Burnham answered questions about the recent Makerfield by-election. He spoke about the importance of engaging with local communities and said that he had greatly enjoyed speaking with residents and listening to their views during the campaign. He explained that understanding the concerns and aspirations of the public is an essential part of representing communities effectively.
The discussion covered a wide range of topics, including education, transport, technology, health, employment, the environment, opportunities for young people across Greater Manchester and finally VAR. Mr Burnham emphasised the value of education and encouraged students to work hard, believe in themselves, and take advantage of the opportunities available to them.
Mrs Baylis, English Teacher and organiser of the Newsquest's Young Reporter Scheme said,
"We were delighted to welcome Andy Burnham to our school once again. Our reporters prepared excellent questions and conducted themselves with confidence and professionalism throughout the interview. Opportunities like this help students develop important communication skills and gain valuable experience speaking to public figures."
Students from across the school enjoyed hearing from the Mayor and learning more about the many responsibilities involved in leading Greater Manchester. The visit provided a valuable insight into local government, democracy, and public service.
We would like to thank Andy Burnham for taking the time to visit our school and for sharing his experiences with our students. We look forward to welcoming him back again in the future.
